Discover Porto-Vecchio
Located in southeastern Corsica, Porto-Vecchio combines rich heritage, fine sandy beaches, and a relaxed lifestyle. From Royal Palm, it’s easy to explore the town and its surroundings at your own pace: a morning by the water, a stroll through the narrow streets, lunch overlooking the gulf, and then back to the residence.
A City Born Facing the Sea
The history of Porto-Vecchio began in 1500, when the Genoese founded a fortified town here on a promontory overlooking the gulf. It was intended to serve as a stronghold and a home port.
Cork processing and salt production brought sustained economic activity, but the real turning point came in the 20th century: after the liberation of Corsica, the U.S. Army cleared the eastern coast of the island. Freed from disease, the coast was able to be settled, develop, and eventually become the seaside resort we know today. The saltworks, now peaceful, serve as a reminder of this heritage.
The historic center is best explored on foot. The Genoese ramparts, the cobblestone alleys, and Place de la République, with its shaded terraces, make for a lovely first stroll. The view of the gulf and the marina is worth the trip on its own, especially at the end of the day, when the light softens.
The Gulf's Beaches and Day Trips
The region boasts some of Corsica’s most beautiful beaches:
- Pezza Cardo, about 600 meters from the residence: a small beach with a sailing school, perfect for a morning swim
- Saint-Cyprien and Cala Rossa, about a 5-minute drive away: calm waters, restaurants right on the sand
- Pinarellu, a 10-minute drive away: light-colored sand, turquoise water
- Santa Giulia and Palombaggia, a 15- to 20-minute drive away: light-colored sand, turquoise water, and umbrella pines in the background
For a change of pace, the area offers other getaways beyond the city center and the beaches:
- The Ospedale Forest, offering welcome coolness on hot days
- The Bavella Needles, for a spectacular mountain panorama
- Bonifacio, with its citadel and white limestone cliffs, for a full day’s outing
After exploring the city and the beaches, it’s a pleasure to return to the tranquility of Royal Palm.
